Air Traffic Management during Rare Events Such as a Pandemic: Paris Charles de Gaulle Case Study

Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport was the second European airport in terms of traffic 2019, having transported 76.2 million passengers. Its large infrastructures include four runways, a taxiway network, and 298 aircraft parking stands (131 contact) among three terminals. With current pandemic place, air network has declined by −65% flights when compared with 2019 (pre-COVID-19), severe negative impact on aviation industry. More more often taxiways runways are used as spaces for consequence drastic decrease traffic. Furthermore, due to safety reasons, passenger terminals at many airports have been partially closed. In this work we want study effect reduction physical facilities airspace capacity, especially Terminal Manoeuvring Area (TMA) airspace, ground side. We developed methodology that considers rare events such pandemic, evaluates reduced access facilities, management restrictions capacity side airspace. built scenarios based real public information use conducted different experiments hypothetical recovery scenarios. An already known optimization metaheuristic implemented optimizing aim avoiding conflicts overloads The results show main bottleneck system is terminal it starts become congested even low (35% traffic). When increase, delay strategy effective mitigating conflicts; however, reveals need additional runways.
